Thought for the Week
Kind words are short and easy to speak,

but their echoes are truly endless. - Mother Teresa

SAFEGUARDING    Learning from the past. In his Ad Limina address to the Irish Bishops on 28th October 2006, Pope Benedict XVI stressed the need to

(i) establish the truth of what happened in the past;

(ii) to take whatever steps are necessary to prevent it from occurring again;

(iii) to ensure that the principles of justice are fully respected; and

(iv) above all, to bring healing to the victims and to all those affected by these egregious crimes.

As a church we commit to this journey of justice, truth, healing and abuse prevention.

Thought for the Week
'For every minute you remain angry,
you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind'
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)

SAFEGUARDING   Children have a key place in the heart of Jesus who said: ‘whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it’ (Luke 18:17). This places a sacred obligation on the Church to ensure that children are welcomed, cherished and protected in a manner consistent with their central place in the life of the Church.

Please remember ‘Safeguarding children is everybody’s responsibility’

Next Thurs. is Alzheimer's Tea Day and a tea morning will be held in Ruan Community Centre from 10am to 1pm, where home baking will be served up with a cuppa to raise funds for the organisation. The support of community is much appreciated.
A new Alzheimer's Daycare centre and offices are now located in the grounds of Cahercalla Hospital and people are invited to visit on Wed. 4th May, for a cuppa, and also to have a look at the facilities on offer there, for which much of the funding has come from the support of these tea days.

Clothes Collection: A clothes collection will be held in Toonagh Hall on Thurs. 5th May. Members of the Parents Association will be on hand from 9-10am, 1.45-3pm and 6.30-7.30pm to take bags from people and should anyone need bags collected, they will also collect them from their homes. Monies raised go towards school supplies.

Ruan and Dysart Apostolic Work Society thank most sincerely all who supported them at their recent Annual display of work. A special word of gratitude to those who worked throughout the year – sewing, knitting, doing crochet, embroidery, rosary beads, flowers etc. We also acknowledge the generosity of all who donated sacred vessels, raffle prizes and our honorary members. We thank also those who prepared the Community Centre and those who prepared beautiful food for the day. We appreciate very much the support we got from apostolic members from across the County which included our Apostolic President Mary Duggan who comes from Bridgetown.

All money collected and the sacred vessels go directly to the missions to help with their educational and medical needs. Once again we thank you sincerely for all your help.

Ruan Minor Club Under 14: Ruan suffered a one point loss away to Wolfe Tones in the quarter final of the Under 14 B Championship on Friday last. An under strength Ruan side who were missing two players due to illness, put up a great performance. Leading by two points a last minute penalty was their undoing and the final score was 4-6 to 2-11. This team has played some very impressive hurling in the championship and showed great improvement with each outing. They now continue their preparations for Féile na nGael in Down next month and are busily fundraising for what will be a most memorable weekend for them.

Archbishop Eamon Martin said recently ‘Together we have created a culture of safeguarding that is becoming embedded in the Church. Risk to children and young people is minimised within a safeguarding culture where everyone plays their part in ensuring that all Church activities are safe places for children and young people. Marriage Referendum: On 22nd May citizens are being asked to vote on two significant issues affecting our Irish Constitution: The lowering of the age for our President and the Definition of Marriage in our Constitution.

From the Catholic Faith perspective here are some reflections that may assist in helping your discernment of the issues being discussed and debated in the run up to the Marriage Referendum:

  • The Catholic Church is quite clear in its teaching and understanding that all people (irrespective of race, sexual orientation or other factors) are created in the image and likeness of God the creator and deserve respect and reverence in their journey to respond to God’s call in the circumstances of their lives.
  • The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible…..They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfil God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition” (Catechism of the Catholic Church No 2358)
  • The Irish Catholic Bishops Conference has commented on the proposal in relation to the Referendum on Marriage in their statement issued in March :  Marriage is Important – Reflect before you change it”
  • Marriage is of fundamental importance for children, mothers and fathers, and society – all of us need to reflect deeply before changing it.  We ask the people of Ireland to consider very carefully the profound implications which this constitutional amendment would have on the family environment and on our understanding of parenthood.
  • We encourage everyone to think about these issues and to vote on May 22nd.  The effects of this proposed amendment will be far-reaching for this and for future generations.  We say to all voters: Marriage is important – Reflect before you change it.

The Unfilled Gap.

Nothing can fill the gap, when we are away from those we love

And it would be wrong to try to find anything

Since leaving the gap unfilled preserves the bond between us.

It is nonsense to say that God fills the gap.

He does not fill it but keeps it empty, so that our communion

With another may be kept alive even at the cost of pain.

(Dietrich Bonhoeffer from John O'Donohue's Divine Beauty)
