Thought for the Week:

"Advent is a journey towards Bethlehem.
May we let ourselves be drawn by the
Light of God made Man"            Pope Francis.

Advent Branch:  During the Season of Advent & Christmas a branch is situated in the sanctuary of the Church. People are invited to take a card from the basket & write on it the name of someone they wish to pray for during Advent & Christmas - someone who has died at home or abroad, someone who is sick or suffering in some way, a loved one who is living abroad, etc.

The name can be hung on the branch & will be remembered in our prayers over Advent & into Christmas. People may also hang a card on the branch signifying the gift they would like to possess - joy, happiness, compassion, peace, kindness, courage, etc.

Missionvale Collection:  Now that almost all the building work has been complete in Missionvale, South Africa, the task for Sr Ethel Normoyle is to maintain the services which include school buildings, medical centre and most importantly the feeding of over 1,000 people daily.

However, what is blatantly obvious to anyone visiting Missionvale is the immediate need for funds. The fragile lifeline that the Care Centre throws to the inhabitants of Missionvale is totally dependent on financial support. As Sr Ethel says “We invite you to help us to eradicate this poverty through the resources that God has given you, your energy, your prayers, and your money. You will not be parting with your security but rather sharing in our fruitfulness.”

You can help her by contributing to the Church Gate Collection on Christmas Eve in Ruan and on Christmas Morning in Dysart.

Killaloe Diocese JPIC group in conjunction with Mid-West Simon Community are launching the Christmas 2 euro appeal. At this time of year we all have gifts at the forefront of our mind but imagine if you could give the gift of a home to a family for just 2 euro. That is what this project seeks to do. Keep an eye out for posters and collection points as they go up. Collection takes place from Dec 12th - 24th.

The Killaloe Diocesan Youth Council invite young people aged 16 and over to their Christmas Fun, Faith and Social afternoon on Sunday 11th December from 2 to 4pm in the Church of Our Lady, Roslevan. Everybody is asked to bring non-perishable food items, which will make up hampers for those in need in our local community. For more information contact Cora Guinnane 0872400135

As the weather gets colder and the days get darker the Killaloe Diocese Justice, Peace & Care of Creation Committee urges all of us to keep an eye on elderly neighbours. As Church we all have a responsibility to look after each other so if you have any elderly neighbours living alone near you, take 5 minutes to check if they need any errands run and to ensure they are warm enough and have enough food. A little gesture can make a big difference.

Old Photographs Appeal: The local history group is appealing for anybody with old photographs of people or places in the parish to contact one of the following to organise to have them copied:  Pat Casey 086 1730756, Michael Leahy 086 6079697 or Margaret Neylon 087 6184958.  Contact can also be made at the weekly meetings in Morty's on Tuesday nights.

Thought for the week
Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting.
It is happiness because we see joy in people.
It is forgetting self and finding time for others.
It is discarding the meaningless
And stressing the true values.
(Thomas S. Monson)

The Justice and Peace Group are anxious to promote care of elderly people who may be living alone during the entire year, but in particular at this Christmas time. If you know of any elderly neighbour or person living in your area who may be alone or in need of some assistance during these times, we would urge you to drop in for a chat or a quick visit. The smallest of things can mean the world to someone, so, we would encourage those of us who are able to keep an eye to our elderly neighbours and friends this Christmas season.

Third Age - Senior Help Line: ‘Do you need someone to talk to? Senior Help Line is a confidential listening service for older people provided by trained older volunteers for the price of a local call anywhere in Ireland, LoCall 1850 440 444. Senior Help Line is open every day of the year, including Christmas Day, from 10 am to 10 pm. Older people call because they feel lonely and want some company in their day. Callers have financial, family and health concerns. A small number are experiencing elder abuse. Some feel depressed and need support to carry on. Senior Help Line ‘s trained older volunteers offer a friendly, listening and non-judgmental ear to all callers. So don't be alone with your problem. Lifting the phone lessens loneliness. We are there. LoCall 1850 440 444’

Thought for the Week
Advent: the four week period that leads up to Christmas - is a series of events designed

not to delay the celebration of Christmas, but to enhance it.

It's a kind of delayed gratification that culminates in a.....

Satisfaction that is all the richer for the waiting.
(Joan Chittister "Listen with the Heart")

Advent Tree:  During the season of Advent, we prepare ourselves to welcome Baby Jesus into our hearts and our homes.

As we wait in hope, let us acknowledge and pray for those who, for one reason or another, will not be "with us" this Christmas - perhaps you know a loved one who has emigrated, someone suffering mental health problems, a hospital patient, someone suffering addiction or Alzheimer's disease ........?
People are invited to take a card from the basket, representing someone we want to keep in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Write the individual's name on it and hang it on the Advent branch. The names hanging on the Advent branch will be removed on Christmas Eve and will form part of the Offertory Procession at the Vigil Mass

People are also invited to take a card from the box - each representing a particular gift you may wish for yourself during this season of Advent, e.g. tolerance, contentment, patience, kindness, compassion, peace, happiness, etc. and hang it on the branch. As we focus on the true gifts of Christmas, let us unite in prayer to prepare ourselves for the coming of Baby Jesus.

Eucharistic Adoration: Eucharistic Adoration is held every Wed. in Ruan Church from 3 to 7 pm. It started in Dysart Church on Thursday, 3rd Dec. from 10am to 1pm. if anyone is free to come for Adoration, they could contact Fr. Pat @ 0862612124 or 6827799 and it would be much appreciated.

The Twelve Days of Christmas.

It is claimed that this Christmas song was written when the Catholic faith was proscribed in England under severe penalties.  It was a kind of catechism to teach young Catholics the tenets of their Faith. The "true love" refers to God Himself; the "me" who receives the gifts is the baptised Christian, and the partridge in a pear-tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus.

Two turtledoves are the Old and New Testaments.

Three French hens stand for faith, hope and love.

Four calling birds are the four Gospels.

Five gold rings recall the Hebrew Torah (Law),

the first five books of the Old Testament.

Six geese a-laying stand for the six days of creation.

Seven swans a-swimming represent the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Eight maids a-milking are the eight Beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Ten lords a-leaping are the Ten Commandments.

Eleven pipers piping represent the eleven faithful Apostles.

Twelve drummers drumming symbolize the twelve points of doctrine

in the Apostles Creed.

Ruan Gaa:

Ruan Minor Club would like to wish all our players, coaches, parents and supporters a very happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2015. This year we didn't win any silverware but made good progress where we contested the Under 14 A and Minor A Championship Semi Finals losing both narrowly. Hopefully we will have a good 2015 with many young hurlers giving their best. Christmas greetings to our two schools, Ruan Camogie Club and Ruan Senior Hurling Club and thanks for your support in 2014.

We would also like to thank Anthony O’Halloran Car Sales for his sponsorship of a Set of Jerseys for the U 6s and U 8s. Anthony presented the jerseys to the Minor Club on Monday night last in Toonagh Hall where Santa also met the children, thanks to all.
